We use SUSE as the primary platform for all services capable of being provided from Linux. This ranges from network services (DNS, DHCP, etc), an EHR (eClinicalWorks), a Curriculum Management System (Elentra), and everything in between. While deciding on a standard product for a stable, enterprise-supported, secure Linux platform that is cost-effective, SUSE stood out as the best option.
  • Provides a stable Linux platform.
  • Follows Linux standards better than most.
  • Provides Enterprise supported products.
  • The support window for service packs after a new SP is released is too short.
  • Community engagement is low.
  • There are times when supported packages fall too far behind and create compatibility issues with applications. The Open Build Service usually provides a way around this, though.
I would recommend using SUSE in any scenario where you need an enterprise Linux platform as long as the service/application being hosted can be supported on SUSE.
  • Enterprise Support.
  • Cost-Effectiveness.
  • Automation support (SUSE Manager, YaST cloning, etc).
  • Budgetary improvements.
  • Better vSphere resource usage through consistency.
  • Better sys admin time management through consistency/automation.
For our environment, SLES provides a more cost-efficient, standards-based Linux with Enterprise support available than their competitors. They also provide the best compatibility between their enterprise Linux and community distributions.

We're running our SAP application servers and Hana databases exclusively on Suse products. Our application servers on SLES, our Hana databases on SLES for SAP. So far, I've been impressed by the ease of use of Suse products. The documentation from Suse and SAP covered almost every problem I ran into so far, and the few problems I wasn't able to solve were promptly handled by suse support.
  • the learning curve and setup time are very reasonable
  • the support engineers are fast, friendly, polite and know what they're doing
  • the quality of the documentation is very high
  • sometimes it takes too long for new versions of packages to appear in SUSE's repositories
  • some open-source solutions that are valuable don't end up in the official repo at all (but you can install them from the OpenSUSE repo)
  • sometimes niche topics aren't covered in the documentation
Suse is very well suited for running sap workloads. It has never failed us so far, the package selection and documentation make it very easy to set up our servers and run our workloads without any hiccups. As I personally see it, Suse is an enterprise Linux distribution, it is best suited for supported industry applications. It might be less suited for running open-source (unsupported) applications
  • competent support staff
  • good documentation
  • competitive pricing
  • none so far
For running SAP workloads, I'd definitely recommend using SLES. AIX is running on power infrastructure which is very pricey and RedHat required a different license and a lot more parameterization to get SAP up and running properly.

Suse Linux Enterprise is being used as our main Operating System for our most critical business application which is our SAP ECC Suite running on SAP HANA. We decided to go with the Suse option for our brand new servers, being it the most popular among businesses, but also because of the great reviews I have read. Suse has been installed on a bare metal and virtual server and it runs very smoothly on both. Our transactional speeds have been off the charts and we can't be more satisfied with the performance that our new servers running on Suse Linux have brought to the organization.
  • When it comes to ease of using / administration of Suse Linux, we found the learning curve to be very small, coming in from a Windows environment. We were able to handle our admin tasks quite well and without any interruption.
  • Response times of our server has also improved moving from an older Windows setup to the Suse Linux environment. We have not experienced bottlenecks in terms of performance of our SAP HANA and we can quickly run long running statements 300x faster with the help of Suse Linux and SAP HANA.
  • Finally, we observed that Suse Linux has more security features out of the box that what we had from our Windows setup. There's lots of great content available online for us to learn more about Suse Linux and how to implement it.
  • Our team just noticed that there are some issues we have on sharing of folders files between our CentOS and Suse Linux. The files on the shared folder have their permissions by default not available even for opening/reading even if the configuration was to give access to certain users.
  • I just wished Suse Linux had a control panel feature out of the box which enables my team to administer the entire server via the web browser, instead of installing a 3rd party add-on like Webmin.
  • As with any Linux distro available, GUI is still not as par with Windows server counterparts so part of the learning curve is navigating through the entire system, especially with the administration tools.
Suse Linux Enterprise would be the perfect operating system for any critical business system application like SAP HANA. Linux is really awesome for server and beats the Windows servers in terms of the overall value, cost, and features. It would be perfect for any size business and should definitely be in the shortlist of operating system for just about any business critical system.
  • We just recently moved from a Windows server setup to a Suse Linux setup. Running through the entire process of computing for a Return on Investment would take us a full 2 years more based on current best practices in our company. So far, we have achieved our business objective of ensuring that our SAP is running as smoothly as possible.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and CentOS
We consulted our service provider on their recommendation and made some research ourselves. It was a hands down win for Suse Linux on both fronts so we readily chose Suse Linux for our operating system of choice.
Red Hat and CentOS would almost be of the same distro package, except Red Hat is commercial and CentOS is a community maintained distro. However, as what was gathered from various sources, Suse Linux is the best choice for our SAP HANA.
